How to Summarize Long YouTube Videos and Podcasts

TL;DR: To summarize a long YouTube video, paste the link into PageSum and choose Key Points. Videos with captions work at any length. You get a summary plus chapters with start times, and you can ask follow-up questions about any part. For very long videos, the summary covers roughly the first hour of the transcript, so for a 3-hour podcast, use the chapters and questions for the later parts or summarize a timestamped clip.

A one-hour lecture is roughly 9,000 spoken words, which is a 40-page transcript. Pasting that into a chatbot is slow, often too long for the message box, and throws away the timestamps. A dedicated video summarizer fetches the transcript itself and keeps the timing.

Step by Step

  1. Copy the link. Use the address bar URL or the Share button.
  2. Paste it into PageSum at pagesum.app/dashboard.
  3. Pick a mode. See the table below.
  4. Use the chapters. PageSum splits long videos into chapters, roughly one per 5 minutes and up to 12 in total, each with a start time. On YouTube, clicking a chapter jumps the embedded video to that point.
  5. Ask questions. "What did they say about pricing?" is faster than scrubbing through an hour of video.

Limits for Long Videos

  • Captions: Videos with captions work at any length. Most YouTube videos have auto-generated captions.
  • Summary coverage: The summary is based on roughly the first hour of the transcript. Content after that doesn't appear in the summary or chapters.
  • No captions: Caption-less videos are transcribed with AI, but only their start: the first 3 minutes on the free plan and the first 10 on Pro (for YouTube videos up to 30 minutes long). A long caption-less video gets a summary of its opening, not the whole thing. See How to Summarize a YouTube Video With No Captions.

Pro Features That Help With Long Videos

  • Timestamped citations: Each point in the summary cites the moment it comes from, like 42:10. Click it to jump there.
  • Synced transcript: A searchable transcript next to the video that follows playback. Search for a name or term and jump straight to it.
  • Flashcards: Turn a lecture into flashcards and quizzes, then review them with spaced repetition in the study space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI summarize a 2-hour YouTube video? Yes, if it has captions. PageSum accepts it, but the summary covers roughly the first hour of the transcript.

How long does it take? Usually a few seconds for videos with captions, since PageSum reads the existing transcript rather than processing the video.

Can I summarize a YouTube podcast? Yes. Podcasts on YouTube almost always have auto-generated captions. Detailed mode (Pro) works best for conversations.

Does it summarize what's shown on screen? No. PageSum works from what is said. Slides, code or diagrams that are shown but not spoken won't be in the summary.
