How to Summarize a YouTube Video With No Captions

TL;DR: Most YouTube summarizers only read existing captions, so they fail on videos without subtitles. PageSum checks for captions first and, if there are none, transcribes the audio with AI before summarizing. For caption-less videos it transcribes the first 3 minutes on the free plan and the first 10 minutes on Pro. Videos with captions work at any length.

Why Some Videos Can't Be Summarized

AI video summarizers don't watch the video. They read its transcript. On YouTube that transcript usually comes from captions, either uploaded by the creator or generated automatically by YouTube.

Some videos have neither:

  • YouTube didn't generate captions (common for music-heavy videos, some languages, and very new uploads)
  • The creator turned captions off
  • The video is on TikTok, Instagram or X, where most videos have no captions at all

A summarizer that only reads captions has nothing to work with, so it shows an error like "no transcript available."

How PageSum Handles Caption-less Videos

PageSum tries two things in order:

  1. Captions. If the video has captions in any language, PageSum uses them. This is fast and has no length limit.
  2. AI transcription. If there are no captions, PageSum downloads just the audio and transcribes it with a speech-to-text model. The transcript keeps its timestamps, so videos of 3 minutes or more still get chapters.

You don't choose between these. Paste the link and PageSum picks the right path.

Length Limits

AI transcription costs far more than reading captions, which is why caption-less videos have a length cap. Longer videos aren't refused: PageSum summarizes their start. On YouTube and TikTok that works for videos up to 30 minutes; Facebook, Instagram and X videos can be any length. Shorts, TikToks and Reels are usually under 3 minutes, so they're summarized in full on the free plan.

When You Need More Than the Start

  • Check for captions in another language. If the creator uploaded captions in any language, PageSum uses them and can still write the summary in your language.
  • Upload the file. If you have the video or audio file, for example your own recording, upload it on the File tab. Files up to 50 MB are accepted.
  • Upgrade for 10 minutes. Pro transcribes the first 10 minutes instead of 3.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI summarize a YouTube video without a transcript? Yes, if the tool can transcribe the audio itself. PageSum does this for videos without captions: the first 3 minutes free, the first 10 minutes on Pro.

Is the AI transcription accurate? It is accurate for clear speech. Heavy background music, several people talking at once, or strong accents can cause errors, and those carry into the summary.

Does it work for videos in other languages? Yes. The transcription detects the spoken language, and you can choose to get the summary in any of 39 languages.

Why does a video with only music fail? PageSum summarizes speech. A video with no one talking produces an empty transcript, so there is nothing to summarize.
